How to Make Your Slow Computer Feel New Again
Hey folks, Skits here. "My computer is SO slow." I hear this one almost every day. And the next question is usually: "Do I need a new one?"
Here's the good news: about 80% of slow computer issues don't require replacement. They just need some maintenance. Think of it like a car — you don't buy a new one every time it needs an oil change.
Let's walk through six fixes you can try right now.
Fix #1: Restart Your Computer (Seriously)
I know, I know. But you'd be surprised how many people haven't restarted in weeks — or months. Programs accumulate in memory, background processes build up, and performance degrades.
Restart your computer at least once a week. It clears temporary files, resets memory, and gives everything a fresh start. It's the single easiest fix for a sluggish machine.
Fix #2: Close Those Browser Tabs
Every open browser tab uses memory. If you've got 30+ tabs open in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, your computer is working overtime just keeping them loaded.
Close what you don't need. Bookmark what you might want later. Your computer will immediately feel faster.
Fix #3: Check Your Startup Programs
Lots of programs set themselves to launch when Windows starts. Over time, this builds up and your computer takes forever to boot.
Here's how to check:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Click the Startup tab (in Windows 11, click "Startup apps")
- Look for programs you don't need running at startup
- Right-click and select "Disable" for anything unnecessary
Caution: If you're not sure what something is, leave it alone. Disabling the wrong thing can cause problems. When in doubt, give us a call.
Fix #4: Clear Out the Junk
Your hard drive needs 15–20% free space to run smoothly. If it's nearly full, everything slows down.
- Empty the Recycle Bin
- Clear out your Downloads folder (see our File Explorer guide)
- Uninstall programs you don't use anymore
- Run Windows Disk Cleanup (search for it in the Start menu)
Fix #5: Update Everything
Software updates don't just fix security issues — they often include performance improvements too. Set aside 20–30 minutes, run all pending updates, and restart when prompted.
Fix #6: Check for Malware
If your computer is slow and acting weird — pop-ups, programs opening by themselves, the fan running constantly — malware might be the culprit.
Run a full scan with Windows Security (built into Windows 10 and 11). It's actually quite good these days. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Full scan.
When It's Time to Call for Help
If you've tried all six fixes and your computer is still struggling, the issue might be deeper — a failing hard drive, not enough RAM, or genuinely aging hardware. That's when a professional diagnostic makes sense.
We'll figure out what's actually going on and give you an honest answer about whether it's worth repairing or if it's time to start shopping. No pressure, no upsell — just straight talk.
The Bottom Line
Regular maintenance prevents premature computer replacement. Just like changing your car's oil keeps it running longer, these simple habits keep your computer healthy. Do them regularly and you'll get more years out of the machine you already have.
